Diazoma Browser for Meta Quest

Diazoma Browser is a web browser for Meta Quest with the Diazoma wall built in. It does what the browser extension does on a computer: it opens the site you are on as a wall that you can walk through in VR. It is for Meta Quest only.

A new tab opens the start page, diazoma.app/app/?via=browser. It has a Start here button and themes (museums, nature and all). Categories (Art, Nature, Photos, Video, Encyclopedias) narrow the sources. Each signed list you added in the settings, such as the adult list, gets its own section; the home page address carries the ids of those lists (&lists=adult). When you added a list, Lists at the top of the page shows one list at a time: All lists, Diazoma (the core list) or a list you added. A start page from an older session, or one opened before you added a list, loads again with your lists the next time you open it. The pictures you save are kept on the headset only. A Suggest a source form lets you tell us about a site that should have a wall. The first time you run the browser, a short intro of three screens explains the basics.

When a page has a wall, a button with the Diazoma arcs shows up in the address bar. The button appears for a page that a recipe covers, or for a site that has its own wall. The menu (⋯) has Open as wall on every web page, so you can also try a page that shows no button.

LevelMeaningWhat happens
3The site has its own wallThe browser opens it.
2The site publishes a manifestThe wall opens over the page.
0A recipe covers the siteThe wall opens on diazoma.app. Only the name of the recipe goes there (and the id of its list when that is not the core list), not the page address.
1 or 0The page is marked up with data-wall-* attributes (Level 1), or the program found a list of pictures and links on it (Level 0, a heuristic)The wall opens over the page.

The first three times a page has a wall, a hint points at the wall button. After that the hint stays away.

A site that asks for no wall gets none. The menu also has Suggest this site, which sends the address of the site to us (see below), and Turn Diazoma off for this site. A site you switch off gets no button and no wall until you switch it on again in the settings.

On the wall, each picture panel shows the date and the source site. Settings → Diazoma has:

  • Show the wall button when a page has a wall. Switch it off and only the menu item is left.
  • Controls of the wall: automatic, Meta Quest controllers, or mouse and keyboard.
  • Curve and Rows of the wall.
  • Recipe lists: the core list, when it was last checked, and a button to check now. You can add a signed list by its https address. A list that is not signed by a key Diazoma trusts is refused.
  • Sites switched off, each with a button to turn it on again.

The browser uses the microphone only after you allow it in the system prompt, in two cases:

  • Voice search in the address bar, which you start with the microphone button. Speech is recognised on the headset with an offline model. The model is downloaded once from alphacephei.com, and no audio leaves the headset.
  • A web page that asks for the microphone, such as a video call. The browser asks you first, for that page only, and the page gets the audio as in any browser.

The browser does not use eye tracking.

The browser sends no usage statistics and no crash reports. Finding a wall for a page happens inside the browser.

It connects to:

  • diazoma.app, at most once a day, to update the signed recipe lists, and to the signed lists you added;
  • diazoma.app when you open a wall from a recipe (the recipe name, and the list id for a list other than core), and the sites that recipe reads;
  • diazoma.app to load the start page (diazoma.app/app/) on a new tab, as any web page loads, with the ids of the lists you added;
  • diazoma.app when you tap Suggest this site in the menu: it sends the address of the site you are on, only when you tap it, and nothing else;
  • diazoma.app when you send the Suggest a source form: it sends what you typed;
  • igalia.github.io and api.heyvr.io, for the list of VR experiences on the new tab page;
  • alphacephei.com, once, to download the offline speech model when you first use voice search (no audio is sent);
  • the sites you visit, as any browser does.

Some museums serve pictures that other sites are not allowed to read. For the recipes that need them, the browser lets the wall on diazoma.app read two picture servers, those of the Cleveland Museum of Art and of NASA, and nothing else. Nobody logs in to these servers, so there is nothing of yours on them to read.

The privacy policy covers the rest of Diazoma.

Write to [email protected] for questions about privacy. For anything else about the browser, use the same address until there is a public issue tracker.

Version 0.1.3 (alpha): a start page that carries old lists (a tab restored from the last session, or opened before you added a list) loads again with the lists from the settings; Lists shows one list at a time.

Version 0.1.2 (alpha): a recipe from a list you added opens its wall from that list; the start page has categories and a section for each list you added.

Version 0.1.1 (alpha): start page with Start here, themes and saved pictures; a first-run intro of three screens; a hint on the wall button the first three times; the menu item Suggest this site; the wall settings Curve and Rows; the date and the source site on the picture panel. Version 0.1 was the first test build.
